Continuing Graduate Student Funding and Opportunities
The intent of the Dissertation Fellowship Program is to provide financial assistance to relieve candidates of current service-type responsibilities (teaching, research and/or other related obligations to the university), thereby enabling them to focus on their research analysis and writing.
- The amount of the award is $8,000 plus a tuition reduction.
- The award is for one semester and cannot be renewed.
Full-time enrollment is required for the fellowship. Online programs are NOT eligible at this time.
Who is eligible for the Dissertation Fellowship Program?
The award is competitive, and the Graduate School has a limited number of Dissertation Fellowships available in any given term. Thus, receipt of this award is not guaranteed.
To be eligible for the Dissertation Fellowship Program students must:
- Be enrolled full-time.
- Be in candidacy.
- Have a copy of their prospectus on file at the Graduate School before the start of the semester in which they hold the dissertation fellowship.
- Be within one year of the completion of their Dissertation.
- Have participated in UM’s Three Minute Thesis (R) Competition before they are nominated for the Dissertation Fellowship.
Students are nominated by their department chair who submits a letter of support.
The Summer Graduate Research Assistantship Program supports promising graduate students by providing funding to enable them to stay on campus and focused on their research.
The program offers:
- $3,000 for doctoral and MFA students
- $2,500 for master’s students in departments without a doctoral program
This funding is competitive and not guaranteed. It is awarded for a minimum of 10 weeks of summer research and is non-renewable. During this period, students cannot hold additional university employment.
Who is eligible for the Summer Graduate Research Assistantship?
To qualify, students must:
- Be full-time, full-standing graduate students at any stage and in any discipline
- Have participated in UM’s Three Minute Thesis® Competition
Preference is given to doctoral students who have completed their prospectus. A limited number of assistantships are reserved for master’s students in a thesis-option track.
