Post-Doctoral Fellowships

Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows Competition for Recent PhDs– Program for humanities PhD graduates to obtain postdoctoral work experience in fields like policy, community development conservation, arts, culture, and media. The two-year postdoctoral fellowship includes a stipend (listed at $70,000/yr during the 2020 application cycle), employer-based health insurance, relocation allowance, and professional development funds. Deadline typically falls in early spring.

 

PhDJobs– A search tool for jobs by discipline with capacity to specifically search postdoc postings.

 

Chronicle of Higher Education– Although primarily a resource for faculty and administrative jobs, some postdocs are advertised here.

 

Fulbright Scholar Program- Program offers a variety of opportunities and lists postdoctoral fellows open to specific disciplines and to all disciplines.

 

Science Careers– Website lists a number of jobs in the STEM fields including postdoc opportunities.

 

Academic and University Jobs

Chronicle of Higher Education– Cite where many universities advertise open faculty, administrative, and executive positions. Non-profit and for profit agencies also sometimes advertise here.

 

Inside Higher Edu Careers– Listing of faculty, administrative and executive jobs in the academy.

 

PhDJobs– A search tool for jobs by discipline.

 

Science Careers– Website lists a number of faculty positions in the STEM fields.

 

Non-Academic Jobs

Professional associations can be a good resource for locating jobs in settings outside the academy. In addition, the following websites are useful search tools and tips for individuals looking for non-academic jobs.

USA Jobs– The official website for jobs with the federal government in the US.

 

Chronicle of Philanthropy– Lists jobs with philanthropic organizations.

 

Idealist.org– Allows users to search for organizational jobs by location, keyword, or function.

 

Beyond the Professoriate– Website offering resources for those seeking to launch their career with an emphasis on supporting individuals with PhDs seeking work in non-faculty roles.

 

Many articles and resources also exist to help individuals describe how their work as a graduate student provides them with the types of experiences needed for a variety of jobs. For example, FindAPhD describes the skills/competencies that align with different graduate student tasks. Other websites, such as the versatile PhD offer a list of non-academic careers by general discipline type, which can be helpful when first identifying fields of interest.
