Newsletter Spring 2023

Annette Kluck, Dean of the Graduate School

Dear Graduates, Students, Colleagues, and Friends of the Graduate School,

The spring of 2023 has been an exciting time in the Graduate House. Indeed, the graduation celebrations themselves are among the most memorable events each year. This year was no exception, and we enjoyed inspiring speeches at the various ceremonies recognizing the newest graduates of The University of Mississippi Graduate School. The Commencement speaker at the campus-wide Saturday morning ceremony in the Grove also provided a powerful message to our graduates. Our first story features two of our graduates and other highlights from the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony. In addition, you can read about several of our graduates featured in the Journey to Commencement stories and can view all of the ceremonies on the institution’s commencement website.

This newsletter also features several other current students and graduates. First, read about five of our Elite Scholars (and learn more about this recruitment program designed to attract top doctoral student scholars to the University). Then, you will meet a student whose impressive career in business has led her to Oxford to study Spanish in pursuit of a second master’s degree to enhance the ways in which she serves her clients. Next, in our fourth story, you will learn about the research of several students working in the areas of race and ethnicity, as well as a great new forum for scholarly exchange on these topics on our campus. For our last story, we are excited to feature several alumni whose time in Oxford led them to fall in love with the area and pursue careers in the local and nearby communities.

Beyond the many accomplishments of our students and graduates, we experienced several other lovely changes this spring. We have two new staff members helping to welcome individuals to the Graduate School at our front desk and in admissions operations (learn about them and other members of our staff on our webpage). In addition, the University’s senior administrators continue to support many graduate-student-focused initiatives and have included graduate education in the strategic plan for the University. Finally, as one more change this spring, we said goodbye to one of the authors of the stories in this edition of the newsletter. Margaret Savoie graduated this spring, and we wish her the best of luck in her career!

This summer, we will prepare for another exciting academic year as we get closer to our 100th anniversary as a Graduate School. Look for news on opportunities for our alumni and graduate students to engage in various events on campus in the fall.

Until then, please let us know how you are doing and stop by to see us if you are in Oxford.

Have a wonderful summer!

Annette S. Kluck, Ph.D.
